Transfer Stations

2O17-ONGOING

The Transfer Station Series is ongoing. It involves a number of facilities in Massachusetts. There are groups of photographs which tell the story of the various processes that take place at transfer stations, and too, tell the story of the people who visit, and of those who work there.

  • People coming and going, recycling, leaving things and maybe finding other things to take with them if there is a swap shop at a given facility: something random and appealing, be it buttons, a painting, coffee mug or lamp.

It is a patchwork of commonality, of shared purpose. It is that purpose that is at the heart of a number of other series that Schiffer Noland Studio works on, such as the Paper Sculpture Series: Observing at transfer stations for what is present, not organizing or arranging, not looking for the “decisive moment”, rather looking at what is there, then looking again and seeing what is there literally, is enough.

It is after making those recordings of what is there, and who is there, and what everyone is doing with and in relation to the stuff of life, that any significance beyond that might make itself known, over time. Looking and seeing and recording are enough, but there will always be more for the viewer to find inside this series; that is, if one visits and revisits and looks and sees, and allows oneself to learn.
